Clinker Dust Cyclone

Clinker Dust Cyclone

MG worked with Lehigh to design and detail a new clinker dust collection system at one of their transfer towers at their cement plant in Delta, BC.  MG provided cost estimating, procurement assistance, process design (including flow and fan calculations), structural and mechanical engineering, and detailed dust hood and piping (thermally insulated ducting) design services.

The new dust collection system includes five pick-up points at various locations within the transfer tower, a central vacuum fan, and a dust cyclone to separate out the dust and return it to the process.

Project challenges included; creating a properly balanced system that provided low but consistent velocity levels at multiple pick-up points, dealing with very hot gases and the resultant heat expansion issues, and dealing with highly erosive dust and the resultant wear issues.  Custom ceramic duct liners had to be used in key locations to combat the heat and wear.

Prior to MG’s involvement, several previous dust systems had been built at this location and unfortunately failed to the extent that they were no longer serviceable.  However, Lehigh reports that the new MG system remains fully functional to this day.
