Demineralization Plant Project

Catlayst Paper Corporation
Port Alberni, British Columbia
Project Year: 2006

MG Engineering acted as subcontractor to Duncan Industrial Engineering (now Allnorth) to provide civil/structural design services for the Demineralization building, MCC room, and associated pipe bridges.
The building is located at the site of the old No.1 and No.2 precipitator buildings and I.D. Fan Room and adjacent to the power boiler and other existing structures in the mill. The entire project is founded on piles and part of the work was determining the capacity of the original timber piles. MG designed and supervised the installation of new steel ‘H’ piles to take the additional loads and the piles are cathodically protected.

The work also included the design of the building internal equipment pads and platforms. The building itself is a pre-engineering type supplied by Colony Buildings. The building’s detailed specifications were provided by MG. The design work included a pipe bridge which is partially independent on its own bents, and partially hung off the new building.
